SANTO ANTONIO DE LISBOA, CENTRO & COSTA LESTE - SAIDA DO NORTE DA ILHA

Ride Description

Duration: 5 hours

The first stop is Santo Antônio de Lisboa, one of the oldest villages on the Island of Santa Catarina. This quaint little settlement, which enjoys official protected status because of its outstanding cultural importance, is a treasure-trove, preserving the traditions of a fishing village community amongst centuries-old buildings and a cobbled main street built from rough-hewn stone in the days of slavery. The star attractions here are the church of “Nossa Senhora das Necessidades”, considered one of the most charming on the island and the two-hundred-year-old “Casa Açoriana”; now a museum and art gallery. Our next stop will be a visit to downtown to visit the fish market and the customs house.

Next the tour follows to “Lagoa da Conceição” (Lagoon of the Immaculate Conception) a fabulous tourist resort, is famous for its local cuisine based on crustaceans. The peaceful waters of the lagoon are ideal for water sports and for boat trips. Following the lakeside “Avenida das Rendeiras” (the lace makers’ avenue) from the heart of the resort along shore of the lagoon, Stop for sea-food lunch in a restaurant that faces the lagoon.

The next stop is the”Praia da Joaquina”. This beach is surrounded by ever-shifting sand dunes and faces out to the open sea. Next is “Praia Mole”, which means soft beach, with its extremely fine, deep sand. Just like Joaquina, this beach faces out to sea and is very popular with surfers. Just a few minutes away is the “Praia da Barra da Lagoa”, which is where the lagoon empties into the sea. “Barra da Lagoa” is a place where tourists can mix with the locals and observe the culture, habits, clothing and accents of the fishermen and their families. Stop to lunch. Back to Hotel.

SUL DA ILHA – FAZENDA DE OSTRAS - SAIDA DO NORTE DA ILHA

Ride Description

Duration: 5 hours

Driving across the island of Santa Catarina to the east coast, the beauty spot PRAIA DO MORRO DAS PEDRAS is the first time the sea comes into view. There is an observation point offering a sweeping view of two beaches. To the left is the extremely long, wide beach of Morro das Pedras with its powerful waves that make it dangerous for swimming, but ideal for surfing. To the right is the PRAIA DA ARMAÇÃO, itself one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Crystal-clear blue waters, that are, however, very cold, lap its broad ribbon of fine, white sand. Despite being an important working fishing village with its bright-colored boats, it has also become a great resort with good facilities to cater for the visiting tourists.

Every year more and more people come to this picturesque retreat, which is home to one of the oldest chapels in Santa Catarina state. Further south is the most traditional fishing beach in the whole of Santa Catarina state, Pântano Sul. The sandy beach is broad, the waves die gently along the shore and almost the entire beach is taken up by traditional wooden boats of the type once used for whaling. Nowadays its also part of the tourist circuit with reasonably good facilities and good seafood restaurants.

Stop for a refreshment at a very peculiar and traditional restaurant, you might even leave your personal message at their walls. Last stop is the “Praia do Ribeirão da Ilha”, where are the oysters farms. This was the first European community to establish itself on the Island and is an outstanding site of cultural history. Traces of the 18th-century colonists’ origins in the Azores are preserved in the local architecture.
