Título
Investigation of antidepressant action of bacterial strains with probiotic potential extracted from the cocoa (Theobroma cacao) and cupuaçu fermentation (Theobroma grandiflorum)
Fundamentação/Introdução
Mental disorders affect people all over the world and have been a public health problem. Data in the literature indicate that the insertion of probiotics can modulate the intestinal microbiota, confer benefits on mental health and set up a new dimension of therapeutic or preventive adjuncts.
Objetivos
Thus, the present study evaluated the antidepressant potential and influence of the chronic consumption of Lactobacillus plantarum 286 (Lp 286) and Lactobacillus plantarum 81 (Lp 81) (extracted from the cocoa and cupuaçu fermentation respectively), on the locomotor activity of treated and not treated with antibiotics.
Delineamento e Métodos
For this, Swiss mice (male) distributed in 3 groups (N=10/group), who received for 30 days vehicle solution, vehicle solution + Lp 286 or vehicle solution + Lp 81 and were submitted to the Open Field (OF) and Forced Swim Test (FST). The procedures approved by CEUA-UESC No. 012/17 were repeated in animals previously treated with the antibiotic amoxycillin with clavulanic acid. All data were analyzed using ANYMAZE® software and ANOVA and post-hoc Bonferroni statistical tests.
Resultados
According to the statistics, the chronic administration of Lp 286 and Lp 81 did not interfere in the locomotor activity of the animals in the OF (p=0.1414), suggesting no stimulatory/inhibitory activity of the strains on the motor regions of the brain and validating the data of FST. In the FST, the two way ANOVA test indicate significative difference between groups (p=0.0223). The Bonferroni test indicate that the animals treated with Lp 286 had a shorter immobility time (104.9 ± 4.6 seconds) compared to vehicle group (120.6 ± 4.9 seconds), indicating the presence of the possible antidepressant action (p < 0.05). Do not was verify significative difference between the Lp 81 group and vehicle group. It was also possible to observe that the antibiotic administered did not alter the behavior of the animals under the conditions evaluated (p=0.2471).
Conclusões/Considerações Finais
Therefore, data from the present study indicate that the Lp 286 strain may exhibit antidepressant activity and the observed effects deserve to be studied in other animal and clinical models for validation of possible psychobiotic action.
