Since 2007, served as an ICREA Research Professor at the Polytechnic University of
Catalonia. Has been an invited researcher/professor at various institutions across
Europe. Member of the Editorial Board of Desalination and Water Treatment and
authored 144 papers focusing on theoretical and experimental studies of membranes,
colloids, porous media, and micro-/nano-fluidic systems. Focused on nano-scale fluid
behavior, his research explores ion and water molecule transfer through nano-metric
layers of composite nanofiltration membranes and nano-porous track-etched
membranes. He investigates current-induced concentration polarization in nano-/micro-
interfaces, intertwined with electroosmosis, enabling precise solute separation like
peptides. Additionally, intriguing properties in layered structures for AC electroosmotic
pumping have been uncovered, along with achieving high selectivities in ion transfer
across polyelectrolyte multilayers. His recent work explores energy harvesting from
water evaporation, leveraging controlled contact between nanoporous electrodes and
electrolyte solutions, paving the way for efficient energy extraction from waste heat in
wetting/drying cycles, highlighting the unexplored realm of partially wet electrodes in
electrochemistry.
